In most cases you cannot turn an eSIM back into a physical SIM. An eSIM is a profile stored inside your phone, and there is no button that writes it onto a plastic card. What people usually need is a physical SIM for the same number, and that comes from the network that issued the eSIM.

What people usually mean

  • You moved your main number to an eSIM and want a card again. Ask your network for a physical SIM that replaces the eSIM. The process, the ID you need and any fee depend on the network, so check with them.
  • You bought a travel eSIM and want to use it in another phone. A travel eSIM is tied to the device where you installed it, so it cannot be moved onto a card. If you changed phones, see our guide to moving an eSIM to a new iPhone.
  • Your phone has no eSIM support. A phone that does not support eSIM cannot use one. Check your phone, and use a physical SIM instead.

What to do if you need a physical SIM

  1. Contact the network that issued your number. Ask for a replacement physical SIM linked to the same number.
  2. Keep the eSIM until the new SIM is active. Do not delete the eSIM first. Deleting it can mean losing the profile, so keep it until the new SIM works.
  3. Switch over, then check calls and data. Put the new SIM in, wait for it to register, then make a test call and open a web page.

Why not just keep both?

Many phones can hold a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time. That is why travellers keep their home SIM for calls and bank messages and add a travel eSIM for data. You can read more in our post on eSIM vs physical SIM, or on converting a SIM to an eSIM.

If you are travelling, you do not need to convert anything. See our travel eSIM guide to choose between a country, regional or global plan.

Questions

Can I convert a travel eSIM into a physical SIM? No. A travel eSIM is installed on one phone and cannot be written onto a card.

Will I lose my number if I delete my eSIM? It can happen. Check with your network before you delete it, and get the new SIM working first.

Can I move an eSIM between phones? Sometimes. It depends on the network and the phone. Some phones and networks support transfer, others need a new eSIM.
