FAQ

About eSIM

Here are some common questions our customers frequently ask about eSIMs.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you install a mobile plan by scanning a QR code. Your phone can keep your home SIM and a travel eSIM side by side, so you can use local mobile data abroad without roaming charges.

What are the available data plans?

It depends on the destination. Most countries have data packs from 1 GB (usually valid for 30 days) and unlimited plans for a set number of days. Some plans add local call minutes with a phone number. Each country's eSIM page lists its exact plans and prices.

How do I install the eSIM on an iPhone?

Your QR code arrives by email right after purchase. Install it before you travel, while connected to Wi-Fi:

  1. Open Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM.
  2. Tap Use QR Code and scan the QR code from your email. If you can't scan it, tap Enter Details Manually and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the same email.
  3. Label the new line (for example "Travel") and keep your home SIM as the primary line for calls and SMS.
  4. When you arrive, choose the travel eSIM for Mobile Data. Turn on Data Roaming for that line if your plan requires it.

How do I top up my plan?

Many plans can be topped up on our Recharge page. If your plan has no top-up there, email support@etravelsim.com with your order number and we'll help.

How do I check my balance?

Log in to My Account with the email you used to buy the eSIM, then click View Balance next to your order. You can also email support@etravelsim.com with your order number.

What types of mobiles support eSIM technology?

Most smartphones from recent years support eSIM: iPhone XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer (including Z Fold and Z Flip), Google Pixel 3 and newer, and selected Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi and Sony models. Check your phone on our device compatibility page.

Does eSIM have a phone number?

Only some plans include a phone number. Most ETravelSim plans are data only, and you can still call and message over WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar apps. Plans that include call minutes come with a phone number, shown on the plan.

Can I use one eSIM on an Apple Watch, iPad, and iPhone?

No. An eSIM is installed on one device and can't be moved between an iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Buy a separate eSIM for each device you want to connect.

Can an eSIM and a physical SIM have the same number?

No. Each SIM, physical or eSIM, has its own number. Your phone can hold both, so you can keep your home number for calls and SMS while the travel eSIM handles data.

Can I use an eSIM on a locked iPhone?

No. The iPhone must be carrier-unlocked to use another provider's eSIM. To check, go to Settings → General → About and look for Carrier Lock: it says "No SIM restrictions" when the phone is unlocked. If it's locked, ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

How to activate an eSIM on my iPhone SE?

iPhone SE (2nd generation, 2020) and newer support eSIM; the first iPhone SE does not. To install your eSIM:

  1. Open Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM.
  2. Scan the QR code from your ETravelSim email, or enter the details manually.
  3. Choose the eSIM for mobile data when you travel.
Is an eSIM faster than a physical SIM?

No. An eSIM and a physical SIM use the same networks at the same speeds. Your speed depends on the network, your plan and the coverage where you are.

Which iPhone models have an eSIM?

Every iPhone from iPhone XR and XS (2018) onwards supports eSIM, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). iPhone X and older models don't. See the full list on our device compatibility page.

How to enable the eSIM on a Galaxy S20+?

Go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your ETravelSim email or enter the details manually.

How to convert from an eSIM back to a physical SIM card?

A travel eSIM doesn't replace your physical SIM: both work side by side. After your trip, switch the travel eSIM off, or delete it once the plan has ended, and your phone uses your physical SIM as before. Don't delete it while the plan is still active, because it can't be reinstalled. To move your own number from an eSIM to a physical SIM, contact your home carrier.

Why would you need an eSIM data plan?

A travel eSIM gives you local mobile data abroad at a fixed prepaid price, so you avoid roaming charges. You buy online, install it by QR code before you fly and are connected when you land, with no SIM shop and no card swap.

Why is using eSIM better than using public WIFI while travelling?

Mobile data on an eSIM is encrypted by the mobile network, while public Wi-Fi is often open and shared, which makes it easier for others to intercept your traffic. A travel eSIM also keeps you online away from cafés and hotels.

How to check handset compatibility for eSIM?

Dial *#06#: if your phone shows an EID number, it supports eSIM. It must also be carrier-unlocked. You can check your model on our device compatibility page.
